The Three Young Lions Aiming to Bring Football Home at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Sixty years. That’s the period that separates England’s only brush with World Cup glory and the promise of a new dawn. For generations of English supporters, the years since 1966 have been marked not just by missed penalties and near-misses, but by the sense that football’s cradle has become its most passionate, unfulfilled suitor. Wembley heartbreaks, last-gasp exits, and those glorious summers of 2021 and 2024, soured by Italy’s steely nerves and Spain's technical brilliance—all of it composes the anthem of a nation desperate to carve out a fresh verse.

Yet, as the Three Lions barrel toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, a seismic shift stirs beneath the surface. For once, optimism is not merely a confection of hope—it has a backbone. England’s back-to-back runs to the European Championship final have forged a squad hardened by near-triumphs and sharpened by public expectation. Now, the bookies consider them genuine contenders.

Tight at the Top of the Betting Charts

The latest odds for the 2026 World Cup currently have England listed as a 7/1 joint favorite for glory, level with both France and Brazil, surprisingly ahead of reigning European Champions Spain... But not by much, and the use of betting calculation tools shows just how little separates last year's Euro 2024 finalists. Using the popular betting calculator at Thunderpick shows that a £10 bet on England to leave MetLife Stadium with the title next July would return a £70 win, as opposed to £90 with a Spanish victory.

But the Three Lions head across the Atlantic with hope. While they may have been conquered last summer by Spain, a new crop of Young Lions continues to come of age. Now with Thomas Tuchel in charge - the German hired with one job and one job only, ending six decades of hurt - the future has never looked brighter for English football. And for these three, the future could come in 12 months' time.

Jude Bellingham

There is composure, and then there is Jude Bellingham. At just 23, he already wears the gravitas of a veteran on Europe’s grandest stages, from guiding Real Madrid through Champions League labyrinths to orchestrating England’s midfield at Euro 2024. His stats speak volumes: a 91% pass completion rate in major tournaments, four goals - including a stunning 96th minute overhead kick to save his side against Slovakia last summer - and a knack for dominating transitions in high-pressure knockout games.

What marks Bellingham as unique isn’t just his technical gifts—though his blend of defensive anticipation and attacking intuition is rare. It’s his sense of the moment. Time and again at Real Madrid, he’s produced the game-altering run or the third-man burst that unpicks a stubborn line. In England’s colors, his influence was transformative throughout Euro 2024. When the ball finds him, tempo shifts; anxiety in the stands dims to anticipation. He’s the pulse, the axis around which England’s hopes will rotate.

Can Bellingham absorb the suffocating pressure that shattered previous golden generations? The evidence so far: he lives for it.

Bukayo Saka

Speed isn’t merely a number; it’s the destabilizing force that—when unleashed—reshapes a contest in a heartbeat. Bukayo Saka embodies this. The Arsenal winger has averaged 3.1 successful dribbles and created 2.6 chances per 90 at the international level since 2022. His tally of 12 goals and 13 assists for England over that span cements him as the most dynamic wide threat in Tuchel's playbook.

Yet to reduce Saka to mere numbers would do his artistry a disservice. His touch is velvet, his decision-making striking in its maturity. Opposing managers double-mark, midfielders shade their zones, full-backs brace for a firefight—and still, Saka finds the seam to slip through. His work ethic is legendary: covering 11.2 km per game at Euro 2024, he ranks among the squad’s most tireless grafters and remains the brightest spark.

As the World Cup looms, Saka’s dual-threat role—terrorizing defenders and defending his own flank—offers England not just tactical balance but genuine game-breaking firepower. In a tournament where the margins are razor-thin, his surging sprints and pinpoint cutbacks could demolish the wall that’s kept England from the pinnacle for generations.

Cole Palmer

Football, at its best, is a game of chaos harnessed. Cole Palmer is England’s wild card—unpredictable, audacious, and utterly ruthless in execution. The Chelsea forward has erupted since moving to Chelsea two years ago, bagging 45 goals and picking up a further 29 assists since making the move to Stamford Bridge. Last summer, he was criminally underutilized by Gareth Southgate at Euro 2024, proving exactly that when he came off the bench to equalize in the final.

Now, however, Cold P won't be underutilized again. The young playmaker put the best team on the planet - namely, Paris Saint-Germain - to the sword in the recent FIFA Club World Cup final. There, he netted twice and assisted another as the Blues emerged as shock victors, and now Palmer is poised for a leading role within the national team setup.

For Tuchel, Palmer is both a tactical luxury and a necessity. His impact as a substitute last summer was impressive, but it wasn't enough. Now, he is the main creator for the Three Lions, and if football is to finally come home, Palmer will be the man to hand deliver it.
